Issa Sant & Stephanie Keitz

Opening: November 2, 2012, 6 – 9 pm
Exhibition: November 2 – December 21, 2012

Galerie Tanja Wagner is pleased to present new works by Issa Sant and Stephanie Keitz.

In their work, Issa Sant and Stephanie Keitz engage in the absence and presence of bodies. As different as their works are in their materiality, the artists precisely analyze the precarious moment of being barely visible and already invisible at the same time. Loneliness, death, restart, emotional imprisonment and intoxication lie close together.

The figures in Issa Sant’s paintings are hold into nothingness. They commit themselves to a fight for their presence, they fight to avoid imploding – without any point reference. They are formed by the colour, which is applied on both sides of the raw canvas, reconstruct themselves in constant transformation. It is the crumbly edge of the self, the subject in danger of dissolution that plagues Sant. Everything that we experience, everything and everyone that we meet, goes through us, is part of us – an undifferentiated part without a specific space.

Bodies are formed under Stephanie Keitz’ sculptures – crouched, sleeping, laying. They have left the dwelling, faster than the gravity allows the textiles to collapse. From her protagonists the artist produces thin walled moulds of wax-soaked fabrics, which she then covers with singular woolen blankets. What arises is not a detailed replication of the surface, but an object between concrete figure and abstraction. The body dissolves and the emptiness is present, like a phantom pain of a reality that does not exist.

The exhibition is full of figures which are not available for themselves. But still, the invisible or fleetingly appearing bodies are present; you can feel the warmth that is still there, imagine the sweat and the flesh. The works leave room for the observer, challenge memories and associations and the inner need for completion.
